You may have seen the email from Denver Parks and Recreation talking about the fact that sadly, the Emerald Ash Borer, a highly destructive pest of Ash Trees, has been found in Denver.

Read their email below for more information, and reach out to us for a free consultation to inspect your Ash trees (or identify any Ash trees) so we can recommend the best treatment plan going forward. Though the city says yearly treatments are needed, we use a trunk injection treatment that is the most efficient and effective way to prevent the borer from getting into the trees, and it lasts for two years. A trunk injection treatment is much better than soil injections and most definitely spray treatments, which are not ideal for pets, children, the soil, and birds and the bees.

It is recommended to use Certified Arborists that are licensed with the Colorado Department of Agriculture to administer the applications safely. Natural Tree Care & Recycyling is fully licensed and trained to properly protect your Ash tree.

Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed in Denver - email from city

Excerpt below from email from Denver Parks & Recreation:

The good news? There are steps you can take to protect your ash trees and help slow the spread of EAB:

What You Need to Do

Identify Your Ash Trees:

  • Look for compound leaves with five to nine leaflets, opposite branching and diamond-patterned bark. Check out photos and tips to help you identify ash trees.

Inspect Your Trees:

  • Signs of EAB infestation include:

  • D-shaped exit holes in the bark

  • Falling bark

  • Wavy lines under the bark

  • Increased woodpecker activity (especially Northern Flickers)

Take Action:

  • If you have an ash tree, consult a licensed tree care professional to discuss treatment or removal and replacement. Proper treatments are 95% effective when applied by professionals.

  • If removal is necessary, consider replacing your ash tree with a Denver Office of the City Forester-approved species. (Contact us at Natural Tree Care for our honest arborist recommendation.)

Spread the Word:

  • Share this information with neighbors, friends and colleagues to help slow the spread.

Supporting Our Urban Forest

Denver is offering free tree placements in some areas to help grow the urban forest. If you have space in the public right-of-way near your home, you may qualify.  Reach out to us as we can also help plant new trees properly and put them in the right spot for longevity and enjoyment.
